A fascinating exploration of this fundamental aspect of graphic design, The Layout Book by Gavin Ambrose explains the hows, whys and why-nots of the placing of elements on a page or screen layout in an amazing way. A historical overview of the subject is followed by a systematic look at key theoretical principles and practical applications. Offering a huge array of potential layout options and with over 200 color illustrations from some of the world's leading design studios. Absolutely wonderful to find our ‘Branding’ exhibition included in the book as an example of a three dimensional layout that provides order and creating pace.

MAFAD, the abbreviation of the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design, is in the new visual identity written in lithographic pencil over the well designed former logo. Concept and handwriting are by Boy Bastiaens, who was asked to take care of the new creative direction: "it was a unique opportunity to stay away from the standard logo-redesign procedure as the concept fits perfectly to the character of an art institute. To keep this idea vibrant each year the signature of the new name will be drawn by a recognized artist or designer who studied at the academy or someone who has a special relation with the school". The website mafad.nl, made in collaboration with Vagebond, is launched in Milano, Italy during the MAFAD presentation at the Salone del Mobile 2015.
What renders a graphic symbol attractive is its speechlessness: it can be universally understood -transcending every barrier of culture and language- as its content is conveyed into one single image. Representing the personification of a mark of trade, a logo symbol can be considered as the most concentrated form of visual communication. Which explains its increased significance as a communication medium. See about the logo Boy Bastiaens designed for Maurer United Architects and the many visual codes it stands for here.
